Evangelization. What's The Best Method?

Posted by

Evangelization.  There is lot of talk about it today and the new evangelization.  But what does it mean to the average Catholic?  St. Francis arguably said, "Evangelize always and if necessary, use words."  The point here isn't if this a misquote of St. Francis or not, it the meaning of the statement.  Many times it's much better to evangelize by the way we act and live, then to speak and try to change someone's mind with words?  Why not live a holy life to the best ability that we can and be a good example to others as a beginning?

Try to imagine this scenario:  You meet someone who tries to tell you that everything (or most everything) you were taught since you were a child about God and religious was wrong.  That's a tough nut to crack.  Even if they had compelling proof and facts, would you believe them right away and throw out everything you believed to be right and true?  Probably not.  And so this is the dilemma in evangelization.  Many times, simply living by example will make more of an impact then attempting to talk someone into the Catholic faith.  This goes for all people in the Church from clergy to lay people, sisters, deacons, priests and so forth.  Live the faith, faithfully as the Church has taught for millennia and be the best person you can be.

We're not saying that you shouldn't discuss religion or defend the faith when necessary.  We also need to be prepared to do this. However, if we lived our faith, faithfully, like it's the most important thing in the world (it is, isn't it?) then it would be a great step in the world for evangelizing.
