The Miracle Of The Sun. What's It All About?

Posted by

The miracle of the sun occurred as the last of a series of Marian apparitions by Our Lady of Fatima in 1917.  The final appearance was on October 13 in Fatima Portugal.  This year (2017) is the 100th anniversary of this event.

During the year, the Blessed Virgin appeared to three children:  (Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto.  The children claimed that a miracle was going to occur at high-noon in the Cova da Iria on October 13, 1917.  The Portuguese newspaper O Século reported that approximately 30,000 to 40,000 people were in attendance, however eye witness accounts put the number closer to 100,000.

According to many witnesses, after a period of rain, the dark clouds broke and the sun appeared as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky. It was said to be significantly duller than normal, and to cast multicolored lights across the landscape, the people, and the surrounding clouds. The sun was then reported to have careened towards the earth before zig-zagging back to its normal position. Witnesses reported that their previously wet clothes became "suddenly and completely dry, as well as the wet and muddy ground that had been previously soaked because of the rain that had been falling".] Not all witnesses reported seeing the sun "dance". Some people only saw the radiant colors, and others, including some believers, saw nothing at all.

The quote at the end of the 1952 movie The Miracle of Our Lady of Fatima sums up the believe in this event:

“For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible.”

For one of the best movies to explain this phenomenon this is an excellent choice:
